Jose Ortiz is one of the most accomplished and respected riders in Thoroughbred racing, known for his strength in the saddle, tactical precision, and relentless competitiveness. From Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico, Ortiz developed his craft at the prestigious Escuela Vocacional Hípica before bringing his talents stateside, where he quickly rose through the ranks on the New York racing circuit. A mainstay at premier tracks like Belmont Park, Saratoga, and Churchill Downs.
Ortiz captured the Eclipse Award for Outstanding Jockey in 2017 and has consistently ranked among the nation’s leading riders by wins and earnings. Highlighted by a standout start to 2026 winning the Dubai World Cup, the Kentucky Oaks for a second time and completing his own personal Triple Crown winning the 152nd Kentucky Derby on May 2, 2026. Becoming the 9th jockey, first Latino, to win the Kentucky Oaks and Kentucky Derby in the same weekend.
